Park City Area Waters

Middle Provo River
The section of the Provo River as it flows out of Jordanelle Reservoir is known as the “Middle Provo”.
The Middle Provo is the closest stretch of the Provo River to Park City, a mere 15 minutes away flowing through the scenic Heber Valley.
Like the Lower Provo River, the Middle Provo is a dam release or “tail water” river which offers more consistent flows and temperatures making for rich aquatic insect life. Stoneflies, Mayflies, and Caddis all hatch in abundance throughout the Middle Provo as well as ever present midges and sow bugs.
With such an abundant food source, fish densities are very high on the Middle Provo with some estimates at over 3,000 fish per mile! Primarily a brown trout fishery, the Middle Provo is also home to rainbow and cutthroat trout especially in the lower reaches closer to Deer Creek Reservoir.
The Middle Provo River is part of the Provo River Restoration Project. To learn more about this project go here http://www.mitigationcommission.gov/prrp/prrp.html.
Part of the project was to create public access throughout the Heber Valley. While this area of the Provo River can be crowded, those anglers willing to hike a bit from the designated parking areas will be rewarded with a quieter river corridor. White Dog offers Full and half day trips on the Middle Provo.

Lower Provo River
The section of the Provo River that flows from Deer Creek Reservoir is referred to as the “Lower Provo”.
Like the Middle Provo River, this section is also a “Tail Water“ with high fish densities, and amazing blue wing olive and PMD mayfly hatches. Caddis and stoneflies also hatch on this section but sow bugs and scuds play a large part in the diet of the trophy brown trout and rainbow trout of the lower Provo.
While the dry fly fishing can be quite good, nymphing is the preferred technique to hook into some of these river “hogs”. Sight fishing in the gin clear water to some of these monster trout can be challenging, but the reward can be the fish of a lifetime.
A major UDOT construction project recently completed has moved HWY 189 away from this section of the Provo river. With a close proximity to the Wasatch front, this has helped to spread out some of the crowds on the lower Provo and made for a quieter more enjoyable day on the river.
White Dog offers full and half day trips on the Lower Provo. Combine both sections of the Provo River on a full day trip for an incredible day of fly fishing on some of the rocky mountain’s most productive blue ribbon trout water!

Weber River
The Weber River is another blue ribbon trout fishery within 15 minutes of the Park City area.
The Weber River is another blue ribbon trout fishery within 15 minutes of the Park City area.
Similar in size to the Provo River, the “Weeb” as it is referred to by locals, is a great alternative in the middle of the summer when the crowds on the Provo River increase.
The Weber River flows through scenic rural Utah farmland meandering through large undercuts, deep pools and productive riffles. Although mostly flowing through private land, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources has implemented a public access program for anglers in cooperation with local land owners.
Fish densities on the Weber River are not quite as high as the Provo, but there are enough fish to keep any angler happy including some 25” plus trophy brown trout! Rainbow and cutthroat trout are also found on the Weber River and in certain sections can be caught in good numbers. Mountain Whitefish aka “the rocky mountain tarpon” also reside in high numbers on this stretch and can keep your rod bent.
This river has very large caddis hatches and they hatch in abundance. There are also mayflies, stoneflies, midges, sow bugs and scuds to keep the trout well fed. Nymphing is the preferred technique, but dry fly fishing the Mothers Day caddis hatch or the late summer “hoppers” will get some of the Weber River’s bigger brown trout looking to the surface for a quick meal.
White Dog offers full and half day trips on the Weber River. It is possible to fish both the Provo and Weber rivers on a full day trip to experience the great diversity of Utah fishing.

Utah Small Streams
The Weber River is another blue ribbon trout fishery within 15 minutes of the Park City area.
There are many Fly Fishing streams a short drive from the Park City area beyond the Provo and Weber Rivers.
The Duchesne, Strawberry, Currant Creek are just a few of the many great trout steams that are within a one to two hour car ride from Park City and when the time is right can offer phenomenal fishing with very little pressure.
These are only offered on our full day trips as the drive times to these rivers are longer. We recommend these trips for advanced anglers only since the fish can be spooky and found in tight quarters requiring good casting skills. For the experienced Fly Fisherman looking to get away from the summer crowds of the Lower and Middle Provo these trips are a great option.
